long term PPI's

by sue3708, May 08, 2008 06:10AM
What are the long term risks of being on PPI's.  Should one periodically take a "drug holiday".  I have been on and off for years.  38 year old female.  Everytime I go off for a few weeks i end up really sick again.  I have never had any heartburn....but i get weird chest/swallowing/feel like I'm going to pass out symptoms.  So is it safe to stay on them.  Are there any studies?

Thanks,

Sue

Hi Sue,
PPI are very safe drugs. There are no long term dreadful complications reported with PPI. But you may have other subtle problems like loose stools, head ache etc.

There is no need to take drug holidays
