Should I accpet a diagnosis of Epilepsy?

by EmzMum, May 08, 2008 10:33AM
My daugther has been having trembles in her arm, leg and face on the right side for a few months.  When it started it went on for about 6 hours and she didn't lose awareness and it didn't get worse.  The tremble was very minor and just looked like a nerve pulsating down her arm and the top of her leg.  Some of the doctors said it was epilepsy but this is partly because my husband has it.  Some of the other doctors siad it wasn't epilepsy as it lasted too long and was not a sudden jerk.

She has now had 2 EEGs, one awake and one sleeping and a doctor has suggested that she has epilepsy because of these.  I am now further convinced that it is not epilepsy, the tremble looks like fasciculation and can last over 24 hours, even in her sleep.  She has not had any of the typical seizures that my husband gets.

The doctor has said he either wants her to take lamotrogine or Epilim.  These seem to be vrey different drugs to me and I'm not sure how he intends to know when the dose is suitable if she is having fasiculations rather than fits.

I'm not sure what to say to him.  Any advice please?

Seizures can manifest in many ways. My first time ever, I started twitching and that progressed to thrashing rather violently within an hour and a half or so. I never lost conciousness. When that subsided I continued having tremors for over four days in the hospital non-stop while they did tests- basically until I was given Zonegram. I tell you that because it did last a length of time and it was not a sudden jerk and I did not lose conciousness and I do have seizures several times a month that show up abnormally on a  EEG. Just because they are not like your husbands don't mean they are not seizures- everyone manifests differently. You should let her try the meds- to see if it stops. I think it's just as dangerous that she be six months with possible non-stop seizure activity for this can cause it to progress to other parts of the brain and it will be worst. In the end, you have to trust them a bit (I know it is hard) because they are the one's with the tests, not you. Being stubborn about accepting epilepsy can be hurting your child and not helping her. Good luck! I hope she finds what works for her.
