Dad can't stop coughing

by tiger020205, May 08, 2008 02:49PM
My Dad has Liver cancer and Cirrousis of the liver. The reason I say this is because he can't take many meds that Doctors prescribe. It puts him into a small bout of Diminisia. The problem he is having is he is coughing all the time. This has been going on for a couple years. But, lately it's got worse. To the point where he can not sleep. He does not smoke, and aside from the cancer and cirrousis, he is in resonalbly good health. He gets by pretty well for 65 years old and cancer. He has been feeling better (liver wise) since the cancer treatments. We have been to many Doctor's reguarding this coughing, and some think it has to do with his Nasal cavities, and allergies.... which he has always had problems with, but everything they've tryed has not worked. They've tryed many meds and that was a terriable experience for all of us, because his liver can not process many meds at all! I told Mom to take him back to the Ear, Nose and Throat Doctor that gave him prilocec, and tell her it is not working. We are at a loss. What should we do? By the way, please excuse my spelling.

Your best choice would be to take your father to a cough clinic, of which there are now many, especially at academic institutions, such as university hospitals, across the nation.  There is an avid interest in chronic cough at:
• Mayo Clinic, with multiple locations;
• National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver, Colorado (800) 222 LUNG (5864);
• University of Maryland (410) 328-8141;
• University of Massachusetts in Worcester, Massachusetts (508) 856-1975 directed by a widely acknowledged leader in the field of chronic cough, Richard Irwin, MD; and
• University of Michigan (888) 248-5864.
