Do I have Hashimoto's

by waldosmom, May 08, 2008 04:46PM
My lab tests just came back. My TSH is 6.4. My T4 is 5.8 and my thyroid peroxidase level is 975!
My doc wants to put me on synthyoid. Is Armour better? I understand Hashimoto's can be genetic. My mom died of a stroke. Since Hashimoto's indicates an inflammed thyroid and since inflammation has been linked to the production of plaque in the arteries, do you think my mom had Hashimoto's and didn't know it??

This is a different inflammatory process than how we see the vascular inflammation in stroke.

You have early hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's.  Synthroid type meds are the usual first choice and there is no data supporting that Armour or T4/T3 combo is better.  Would usually start with synthroid type meds and re-evaluate.
