Weird Urinary problems

by Tinkerbell04, May 08, 2008 07:52PM
So about 4 years ago when I was 16 I ended up with my first urinary tract infection, the doctors put me on phenazo and Primsol, this helped for one month then sure enough it was back again, I think at that point they put me on Macrobid and once again in a couple weeks it was gone. (by the way I'm a female)

Then sure enough after a little over a year it came back, on and off it kept coming back, 8 times straight in 6 months I had that burning, the blood, the discomfort, and frequent urination. I was on a couple other different drugs for it, (they have on file I've been on 6 different kinds of meds for it so far and I've probably gone through 11 prescriptions in the past 4 years) finally I left it for 3 months, sucked it up and dealt with the pain since the tests kept coming back with no bacterial culture.

Finally by the age of 18 I couldn't walk anymore, every time I stood up and tried to walk even twenty feet I'd scream in pain and fall down clutching my gut feeling like I was going to vomit. I finally decided it was about time I saw a doctor again so I walked over to a clinic on my break, they did a test, and sent me home saying there was no bacteria or blood in my urine.

So I let it get worse until I could see my family doctor and seriously talked about it. When my temp. doc looked at my file she told me they had never sent her the information from the urgent care center, when she had retrieved it she was shocked to have found it was a string of staph bacteria, so she couldn't give me septra like I had inquired to her about. So she did a test, it came out positive and put me on tetracyclen... I really don't know why she did... it was horrible, everything got worse. I'd wake up and my tongue was pure white, like all the blood had dissipated from it, when I urinated there was crystals and it still burned and I had serious back pain and still couldn't walk longer that 5 minutes at a time.

(noting in also: in this entire time I didn't lose my virginity til about 9 months after I was 18 with one man alone and he's my fiance so it's not due to that plus I pee before and after + I wash up after)

Anyways, since that time I've been trying to take better care of myself, I was bed ridden for 2 months. But I still keep getting that burning pain at least once or twice a month and if I don't take action right away and stay home and take care of myself it gets to that point where I'm barely able to walk without all that pain anymore.

(Sorry this is so long but it's been going on for almost 4 years now)

Anyways, I went to my doctor recently, and had a barium test for an ulcer since I'm getting weird cramping and acid reflux, he said the results were normal, but they still have to give me a colonoscopy since they think I have a bad case of irritable bowel syndrom due to stress. No results have come yet since they haven't called me in for it yet, but the thing that gets to me is my doctor has the nerve to keep blaming my UTI's (since most don't come back with bacteria results) on the bowel syndrom which I've only had the symptoms for about a year now. I've also had odd discharge since I was about 4 or 5 years old (my mom hates doctors so she'd never take me to one) and he's telling me that's a result of chlamydia??

This doctor has put me through a lot of stress I've done so many urine tests, had blood work, gone for ultra sounds, checked my urethra and the way it emptys, the size, checked my kidneys, checked for candida, etc etc...

Right now I'm bed ridden again and sick of being only able to walk a few minutes before I'm in excruciating pain.
The preventatives I've done are: taking cranberry pills, wiping properly, keeping clean down there using non-perfumed soaps, drinking non-sugared cranberry juices, drinking 12 cups of water a day, wearing cotton underpants, not using any fabric softeners, getting plenty of sleep, eating healthy, avoiding sugar, you name it and I've probably tried it.

Is there anyone out there who has experienced this and can give me help?
And please don't be rude to me this is my first day on this site.
(sorry I had to post here until the urology section of the doctors forum is accepting more questions)

Hi,

I understand how hard this has been for you. Urinary tract infections are one of the more complex conditions as not all them may present in a clear cut ,textbook type of manifestation. In your case, it sounds like a UTI but the thing about your case is that it has been recurrent despite the medications.

You have had several scans done. Were there anything in the scans which showed some abnormalities or structural involvement? Usually for recurrent UTI's  in young patients, a structural or anatomical defect has to be ruled out.

Another thing to consider here is, are they treating the right organism? Bacterial infections are the most common cause of UTI but other organisms may also infect the urinary tract including fungal infections and TB. Was there any previous exposure with tuberculosis?

Another thing to consider here is an underlying systemic condition like diabetes. Were blood tests taken along this line?
