Cataract toric lenses & contact lenses

by Daigoro, May 08, 2008 08:21PM
I am planning to have cataract surgery in both eyes in several weeks.  Initially, crystal lenses sounded the best, but because of my astigmatism, I would have to go through the cataract surgery first, followed by lasik several months later.  The other option is toric lenses. These lenses, unfortunately, are for distance vision.  After such a surgery can contact lenses be worn on a daily basis to correct the close and middle distance vision instead of those easy to lose reading glasses? Are the lOL for catracts, astigmatism, and full range of sight on the horizon yet?

I would consider a toric IOL or a non-toric aspheric monofocal implant combined with limbal relaxing incisions.  One eye for distance and one with modified monovision for a little near vision.  Think serioiusly about the fact that you will likely need glasses part time at least no matter which option you go with.
You really seem to want it all don't you.  A classic baby boomer?

One last thing.  You really won't want to wear contact lenses after all this surgery.  I would say that I've only had 2 or 3 patients that continued to wear contacts after cataract surgery in the last 5 years.
