Having problem with heart burn

by geetu, May 08, 2008 09:20PM
Hello Dr,
4 weeks back it all started, and I started nausea with lot of upward gas with pressure in my chest. Then i took care of myself by eating light food for two day and my symptoms became better, so I went to my normal diet, 4 days later got the same symptoms with dizziness and weakness so bad that i had hard time getting up.Lost almost 5 pounds in 2 weeks. then went to my physician and she told me its stomach bug, but my symptoms didnt got better so I went to GI specialist and she gave my prilosec 20 mg and I had to get some tests done. Got EGD, liver test, stomach ultrasound all the results came negative, except she said I have mild gastritis so I continued taking the medication. On 5th day of medication I got diahroea, diziness, extreme fatigue bluriness so I stopped taking it, my heartburn symptoms got better but then 4 days later I started getting heartburn again. I have cut all spices and eating everything healthybut still the heartburn is not getting better.
I am not sure what to do. Please help

Hi geetu,
EGD may be normal in upto 70% of the patients with GERD. 24 hours pH monitoring should be done to diagnose GERD.

PPI like protonix can cause diarrhea.

PPI taken before meals along with life style modifications give the best results in the treatment of heartburn.
