2yr post total thyroidectomy graves disease

by boac, May 08, 2008 11:25PM
Dear Sir:  just over 2 years ago i had my thyroid removed due to graves disease, sudden onset, thyroid storm. i lost over 60lbs in 3 months, etc.  after sufgury sent home on .25mcg Synthroid to start.  I weighed 134 at time, but usual weight is 170.  I ahve been increasing dosage every 2-3 months until I am now at 1.75mcg.  I gained over 60 lbs. back within 3 months of surgery, my hair, nails brittle, skin dry, mental fog still, very moody.  I was told by my dentist that thyroid problems also affect teeth and can cause damage like mine.  They are rotting.  I have not had a cavity since I was 12.  I am 52.  My tsh is within limits, but all of my labs are not within range.  ONE:  Should i have been started on a higher dosage after surgery so that my husband and I would not have had to suffer my MOODS for over a year. TWO: is there anything that can be done for the weight and general "not feeling like my old self"? HELP>  I had two total knees done 2003/2004.  with all this extra weight, they will not last much longer and my arthritis is moving very fast to where i cannot use a pen or pencil without it affecting my "damaged" rotator cuff.  the rest of my arthrisis is on the rampage.

HELP
thank you,  BOAC
