LPR medication advice needed badly

by Dragnods, May 09, 2008 08:07AM
After 2 months of severe breathing problems (which has really damaged my life), i have come to the conclusion that
i have LPR.
I have ALL symptoms and have ruled out asthma as the primary cause as well as Vocal cord dysfunction (similar presentation).
I have been a magnet for abusive and ignorant doctors and today i finally got a GP (who had never heard of it) to give me Nexium.
The situation is that i have NOONE to advise me what i should be doing and as i have literally felt on the verge of dying i need advice (i have not been here before).
After getting angry i got him to prescribe 40mg Nexium tablets (deliberately pushing for the higher dose) and through reading 1 other post here have just taken my second tablet for the day.
What i want is:
A) Confirmation i should be taking 80mg a day.
B) Further advice about medication in general.
C) What to do if it does not work.
D) Confirmation that an ENT will know what to do worst case scenario.

I have no question whatsoever this is the cause of my breathing problems (i believe i know about every respitory condition now) and i would appreciate answers to this ASAP.
Thankyou.

Hi Dragnods,
If once daily dose is not giving good results, then you may go for twice daily dosage - immediately before food , the first dose before breakfast and the second dose before dinner.

In addition, you need to follow certain life style changes like -
1. Head elevation while sleeping
2. Small frequent meals
3. Going to bed 2- 3 hours after food
4. Avoiding bed time snacks
5. Avoiding smoking and alcohol
6. Avoiding tight fitting clothes
7. Avoiding cola, citrus drinks, carbonated drinks, tea, coffee, spicy food
8. Weight reduction

4-8 weeks of treatment may be needed for good results.

If symptoms persist, you need to undergo-
1. Upper GI endoscopy
2. 24 hours pH monitoring
