How long should referred shoulder pain last after a laparoscopy?

by tarahurlburt, May 09, 2008 01:07PM
Hi. On Monday afternoon I had a 2.5 hour laparascopy to look at my right kidney which was pexied through an open surgery 13 months ago. When I woke up on Tuesday morning I had awful shoulder pain (near my clavicle). All 4 doctors that did the surgery said it was referred pain from the CO2. The surgery consisted of undoing and partially redoing the nephropexy to make my kidney more "comfortable" and reduce the back pressure and stop the vomiting. I still have a stent in. They also removed adhesions and scarred tissue from both my kidney and right ureter. They covered by right ureter in a "fat" of sorts. THis was done with 4 incisions. I was released from the hospital on Wednesday evening. I am still having "referred pain" I have been passing gas and today had the first bowel movement.
I am terrified this pain is something else. It hurts when I breathe in deep. I have told the doctor both last night when he called and this morning when his nurse called. Neither seem to be terribly alarmed, but I had a pneumothorax after my open surgery from 13 months ago and am scared.
Any insight would help.
I have no fever or any other symptoms besides the bruisy feeling of recovery and the burning feeling of the incisions.

Dont worry the gas used to inflate your stomach does this. I hate it for weeks before mine went away. It can be painful but it does eventually go away. Try walking and burping as much as you can.
