Blooc Clots from Treatment?

by gah_70, May 09, 2008 04:38PM
I feel kind of funny about posting an update on myself here, so to make it not seem so self serving, I'll ask a question, too.

I ended up in the ER Wednesday night because I'd been suffering for a while, actully, with shortness of breath.  I assumed it was just my typical anemia from treatment, so I didn't think too much of it.  But, it got really bad this week, and I didn't think I could ignore it any longer.  Went to see my Onclogist (who is going to be very fired shortly).  Knowing my history of DVT and pulmonary emboli, he said it was probably just bronchitis. Gave me two IV bags of antibiotics, patted me on the top of my head, and sent me away.  So Wednesday, when I couldn't walk from the couch to the bathroom without gasping for air, I went to the ER (when I arrived, my O2 sat was 69).  Turns out I have three blood clots in my lung.  Okay, that's bad enough, but my platelets were 20 (since gone up to 40), so they cannot give me any anticoagulant until they get to at least 50.  I'm already on Arixtra, but had to stop at the first of the week because of the platelet thing.

OK, so have any of you ever had a problem with clots resulting from treatment?  If so, which ones?  I think what confuses me so much is I was already on blood thinner, and I did not have edema in my ankles like I normally do when any of my blood problems.  Any ideas?  Apparently, my Oncologist doesn't have any!

Hi Gail,  So sorry this has happened to you. I have not had a blood clot, but tried searching the web. One website said having cancer increases the risk because of vein damage. Another website said if someone is on chemo, blood clot risk is 1 to 2 %. Yet another site said chemo increased chances to 1 in 25. Then there was mention of the heparin flush sometimes causng clots. If you have a family history of thrombolia (clots) the risk is higher. I can;t figure your platelets being so low and having a clot? Hope they resolve quickly.  Hug          Donna

Hi Gail,

I am so sorry to hear that you are having to go through all of this.  I aggree you should fire your oncologist.  I hope your platelets will get back to normal so you can get the medication you need.  Your profile says you are in the hospital.  I hope you get back home soon.  I will be thinking about you.  Let us know how you are doing when you can but most important just take care of yourself.  I still hope to get to Murray someday so we can meet in person.  Sending you a big hug.

Linda

I am so sorry and thank you so much for letting us know...YOU sure better keep us updated with all you are going thru :)  I have not had clots but do know that they are not unusual with several cancers, ovca being one.  I think I recall reading that ovca causes increased production of procoagulants.
Aren't you planning to go back to MD Anderson next month?
I do hope you feel better.

Updates are always welcome. I'm just sorry to hear you're having so much trouble. You're quite right to be upset with the doctor missing the clots in the lungs. That's pretty critical stuff. I don't have any answers for you but I can send you lots of hugs and big wishes that you'll get things cleared up soon. Do keep us posted. No questions needed. Just talk to us.

Dear Gail,

I wish I knew something about this.  I will do some research today to see what I can find.  You know how I feel about your dr already so I won't say anything else.  However, and this is NOT an empty invitation, I seriously mean it; you are welcome to my guest room for as long as you want it if you want to come here for your treatments.  It isn't that far considering your choices there and you could come here, have chemo, spend a night or 3 and go home.  It sounds like a hassle I know but given your options.... Gail, I hope you know that I REALLY mean this.  Your husband would be more than welcome to come also.  We are crammed in here because we just haven't had time to get properties sold or even think about house hunting since we got married, but coming from a family of 10, I believe there is always room at the "inn".
Love,
Jan

Hi Gail,
Sorry you are going through this on top of everything else.
I have also had PE in my lungs, post op from hysterectomy.
I had a six day stay in hospital.  Had clixane and then heprin which I was told would not get rid of the clots (your body apparently breaks them down) but would prevent more forming.
I am not sure about the chemo drugs but know that I can never have any HRT as these are high risk for clotting.
Your oncologist definitely needs to be fired.  It is Unbelievable that they did not suspect PE especially if you have a history.  Maybe a referral to a Hematologist is needed as well
My prayers and thoughts are with you.
Love..Kim

Hi there. I just returned home from visiting my mom in the hospital - stage IV - she is there due to a mini stroke she suffered on Saturday. From what they have told us the clot they feel was caused by the chemo (she was taken off taxoteer about 3 weeks ago, it wasn't working). We are waiting ekg results in the morning but her oncologist has already advised no more treatment one reason being chemo in general increases the risk of clots. Avastin was to be started tomorrow instead of topotecan but they can do neither, so there are two chemos topotecan and taxoteer I know for sure increase the risk, Avastin as well but it's not chemo. As far as your onc. I would be furious, about three weeks ago mom was having trouble catching her breath told her doc. and she wasn't allowed to leave the hospital that day till they scaned her legs and lungs for clots. Good luck sorry I don't know of any others that increase risk hope I was some help. hugs kimberly
