Multiple kidney stones

by Leigh200, May 09, 2008 05:57PM
I have recalcitrant hypocitrauric, hyperoxalauric, nephrolithiasis which has been thoroughly investigated with multiple 24 hour urines. multiple scans, plain films, urine cultures, full endocrine investigations, etc, etc.  This has been going on now since about 1993.  I began having microscopic hematuria back in the 80's and was said to have likely passed one stone in 87.   After that there was nothing more than the silent urinary blood until 93 when I began to have multiple stones in both kidneys.  These stones are usually small enough to pass in the 3mm to 5mm range and my renal function has not deteriorated except for a brief period when I had a larger stone causing temporary hydronephrosis.  Renal function returned to normal after that stone was removed with ureteroscopy.  I was placed on treatment with potssium Citrate and had a resultant bleeding duodenal ulcer.  I have no significant bowel disease and eat none of the foods which are Oxalate rich.  My main problem is severe pain.  I am either in the process of passing a stone or am passing crystals to the point of apprearing as "sand" in the urine/  I am constantly anemic from the hematuria which is gross at times.  I have been investigated for Ca, and other problems.  I also suffer from premature Coronary artery disease having had an anterior MI at the age of 38. I seem to be a very rare bird and am trying to gather information about whether there are others like me.  When I have a KUB and it shows 20-30 stones, I am looked at as if I am nuts.  I am a well educated person and would like to know if there are statistics on this disease?  Is there anything other than treatmment of pain which might be of benefit?  I have seen some similar stories from patients writing about having this problem.  If anyone knows of any medical literature which exists on this, I would be  very grateful.  Thanks,
Resepctfully,
Leigh200
