Exercise vs. Pain

by Seek_r, May 09, 2008 07:51PM
I have been diagnosed with cervical myelopathy and severe spinal stenosis. Last September I underwent removal of three cervical discs and fusion with implant of bone grafts from my hip secured by a metal plate and six screws. I feel no pain in my neck however I have been plagued by pain down my right leg before and after the surgery. It runs down the back of my leg behind the knee and then around the side down the calf along the side of my foot into the big toe. It feels like an intense burning pain like someone has poured gasoline down the nerve and set it on fire. It is constant and although I am prescribed neurontin and topiramate and take tylenol it just barely manages the pain. I have difficulty walking but manage with a cane. Because of mobility problems and the constant pain I have gained a lot of weight over the years since my problem began and I know this does not help. What can I do if anything to lose weight as exercise with this pain and with the back problems is torture. I do not eat to excess but with the difficulty exercising it is a problem. Any words of advice? I can't take narcotics. They make me projectile vomit and I don't like the way they make me feel. So I have two problems. The management of the pain and how to exercise when the pain is so excruciating and how to lose the weight.
