surgical biopsy following radiation

by august2008, May 09, 2008 10:43PM
Should I be concerned about having a excisional biopsy (is this another term for lumpectomy?) on a breast that had radiation x36 & boost - Nov-Dec 2006?  This followed a lumpectomy& axillary dissection with a second surgery  to get clear margins and chemo ac-t. I developed an irregular hard mass in the breast, not close to the surgery scars, about 6 mo ago.  Mammogram, ultrasound & core needle biopsy was done.  They couldn't "find" it, though its evident by feel.  The biopsy result was "fibroadipose tissue."  Since then, the skin over the mass has darkened and the skin has changed -- looks sort of dimpled.  I expressed concern to my surgeon at my annual checkup this week and he wants to excise it.  Said he agreed with me that it seemed a little weird and doesn't feel comfortable trusting a needle biopsy.  At the time, he made a comment about tissue not healing as well after radiation, which I didn't follow up on.  Now, I'm wondering if this is a big concern.  I haven't found anything on line about it.  Should I be worried?

I believe I would talk this over with your RadiationOncologist since radiation can inhibit healing in some instances.
