Tests/treatment for Borderline thyroid?

by jamtart, May 10, 2008 12:10AM
I'm a 26 year old female with a history of hyperthyroid in my family and have often suspected I too am hyperthyroid.  For years I've suffered with depression and ridiculous insomnia, extreme fatigue with strange energetic spells, muscle aches in my arms and upper back especially.  My hair falls out in the shower.  I'm just of late having trouble concentrating and have begun to have frustrating memory loss.  I'm always sweating when everyone else has a sweater on.  My hands shake, my heart palpitates!  What else is there?!  My weight fluctuates ridiculously - usually up when my appetite is low and down when I'm stuffing my face?! Go figure. My TSH tests came back borderline a couple years ago and have been normal since - what else should I be asking my doctor for?  I think I've had my t3 checked at some point to no avail.  Are there more discerning tests I should be pressing for? I don't know what else to do - I feel like a sack of **** all the time - sometimes I'll have a couple of days where I feel semi-human and I wonder if my levels may have briefly stabilized?  If anyone has any advise or a similar story from which they recieved results and treatment I would appreciate hearing from you.  Thanks!

Unfortunately, you have to push for treatment. I was in your exact situation, slightly hyper, felt like hell, so I had to throw a fit to get antithyroid medication. It's made a huge difference in my life. I'm hyperthyroid again b/c I'm pregnant but atleast I know what's wrong with me. I was in your situation for years being told I had clinical depression -- but thyroid was the root of my problem, not depression. Get copies of your test results and keep at it. Good luck.

Well this all sounds so familiar.  Do you have any idea what a high T3 is?  All I was told was that my T3 is over 200,  that I have mild hyperthyroidism and I was given medication.  I had a TSH done 3 years ago and I assumed it was normal since I never heard from my doctor, but I've had the same symptons for years.  They are pretty much the same symptons you have.  The only kicker, I'm considered morbidly obese and I thought hyper meant you loose weight.  Go figure!

I never had to push for treatment at all.  Matter of fact, I was given medication before I even knew that my t3 level was elevated, but what information I've gotten on hyperthyroidism, I got for the web and not from my doctor.   I also was diagnoised with clinical depression and I believe that this may have been my problem all along.
