Plausible 3-month pregnancy; assistance greatly appreciated...

by PrecambrianGlobule, May 10, 2008 01:20AM
I would so greatly appreciate someone's educated insight...

My Fiance and I had 8 days of unprotected sex, during my ovulatory phase. About a week and a half to two weeks later, I began having daily headaches, and for the first time in my life - intermittent breast pain. It was alarming, and unique to me, but as a science major and child of two medical professionals, I immediately dismissed it all as PMS. I knew the symptoms are notoriously similar, because of progesterone. I am healthy, and do not take any meds/BC. My normally clockwork period was several days overdue (5?), when I experienced some spotting - what I again dismissed as a "fluke" of a period for barely even two days. It was accompanied by very light cramping, as opposed to my usual cramps, which require Tylenol, hot packs, and cause me relatively great discomfort. I also didn't break out, as usual, and was so very tired. Anyhow, I performed 2 early-result pregnancy tests (one at 7 days late, and another at 14 days late), which both came out negative - so I chalked it all up to travel, stress, or some spontaneous event. I know that I did them properly. The statistics said tests were nearly 96% accurate by then. I made an executive decision to wait until my next period, before I wasted my energy and concern. Besides, I wasn't nauseous.

Now, ten weeks from my last NORMAL menstrual period, I am getting increasingly concerned. I had another light bleed three weeks ago; there is logically no way that I could sustain a pregnancy if my uterus shed at ~4+8wks - I know this. But I cannot manage to talk myself out of my symptoms any longer. Even family members are beginning to remark on my almost daily nosebleeds (light ones - and no, I don't have hbp - I had a full checkup/blood work not too long ago, before this all happened), and how my sinuses have gone into overdrive. I'm even having discomfort above my pubic bone during sex. My cousin teases me that I must be menopausal at age 20, as I have random hot sweats when it's 40 some-odd degrees out. I do have daily aches in the uterus/lower back area, that resemble light menstrual cramps. It's very similar to the "fullness" that I feel during my period. I know not else how to explain it. My breasts still hurt - and sometimes, the pain travels to the underarm area, or to my areolae. Occasionally, I'm more gassy than usual. I have noticed an increase in milky discharge (no smells, or weird colors) and absolutely no dry days. My gums bleed every time I brush my teeth, and the hunger is just insatiable. I have kept tabs on my caloric intake, but still have managed to gain five or six lbs over the past three months. Also, I noticed that my heart murmur (I've had it from birth) has been acting up more - though not enough to cause me any major pain, or dizziness, or anything warranting attention.

After I laid down wide-eyed in bed last night, feeling the most bizarre stretch-y pains in my uterus, I knew I had to do something about this. The two ob-gyns on my insurance plan have no bookings until the end of June/beginning of July , even with special notes from my GP. I doubt that anyone will take me seriously, as I'm sure they're inundated with young, irrational girls with whom they'll compare me. They asked if I had taken home pregnancy tests, and when, and immediately blew me off, remarking their accuracy in a patronizing tone.

This is where I ask for your heartfelt help, and expertise. Do these symptoms sound familiar to you? Am I wrong, in still considering pregnancy as a possibility, at what would be 3 mos.? If not, what could have caused my body to not even produce 25ml/u of hcG by the sixth week? Would my baby be okay? Could my body have produced so much hcG (multiples?) that the test gave me a false neg.?
If it is of any relevance, I do know that my own Mother experienced many reproductive problems - including ectopic pregnancies, and miscarriages. I also know that she bled "cyclically" when she was verifiably pregnant. Could this have been genetically passed onto me?

Anything is possible. I've heard of people taking a while to show up + on a pregnancy test but usually its because they ovulated later than normal... but yes by now you should have a positive hpt. Levels being extrememly high with multiples would still show + on a test. The only thing I can suggest is that you contact the obygn's on your insurance plan and request a blood test or pay out of pocket somewhere else (which could be a little pricey).

i was told that m/c's and etopic pregnancies are not 'genetic'. if you are 10 weeks past a period and still have neg. hpt's, i would see a doctor/clinic and have blood drawn. your body may have a chemical/hormonal imbalance causing your symptoms.

I think she means the bleeding while pregnant might be genetic. I have heard that it seems to run in families... but yeah miscarriage and ectopic pregnancies are just the roll of the dice. Nothing genetic about them.

definately go to your ob/gyn. have them do an exam, test all that fun poking and proding stuff that we women love oh so much (yes i'm being sarcastic with the loving it part). i had a friend who didn't get a positive hpt all through her pregnancy and now has a very cute and healthy 1 yr old little boy. i on the other hand got my + the day af was due....so that varies. only sure way to know is to visit your doc.

miscarriages have a genetic component (often because genetic abnormalities in the baby causes the miscarriage) and that is why you get a family history that includes who and how many miscarriages are in your family.

I think you definintely need to test again/ get blood work from your doctor.

Just test again, and you'll know.

(I'm assuming from your post that you haven't tested since that 6 week test.)

Despite all the posts to the contrary, you will almost certainly test positive once you have built up enough HCG to be detected by the test.

If you continue to test negative, and have questions as to the accuracy of the test, simply see your doctor to find out.
