chromosomes and genetics

Son was diagnosed with Acute Mylogenous Leukemia.  A test was confirmed with at least five of his
chromosomes altered.  Oncologists say it could be due from one of the parents.  
Can they not tell ?  If the chromosomes  was due to genetics? Or from environmental?
