Burning Lip

by Corehead, May 10, 2008 07:33AM

My wife has been suffering since September with chronic burning lips and also has had a rash above and below her lips.  They are quite painful.  She was seen by an environmental dermatologist at NYU Hospital who diagnosed allergic reactions to chemicals found in cosmetics.  Her lips got better for a while after changing cosmetics, however,  the condition has returned.  She has thrombocytosis and also has a positive ANA reading for C.R.E.S.T. syndrome but rheumatologist and dermatologist have ruled these conditions out.  This week a rash appeared above and below her lips.  What can she do to treat it?

Thank you,

A topical steroid (cortisone) cream should help alleviate the symptoms.  Sometimes even if the root cause is allergy Ti chemicals, the skin stays sensitive for a period of time after avoiding the trigger and needs to be calmed down with medication.  You'll need to discuss this with the highly-qualified dermatologist you've already consulted in person, though.

Best.
