my doctor stopped treatment. started at 780,000 viral load. last 12 weeks it stayed between 36 & 40. Started treatment in sept. 07. I went into this with high iron level. can this effect the response of treatment.

Yes mike, it can.  High iron levels can effect the response of SOC.  I don't understand why your doctor did not try to reduce the levels before starting tx.  I had to go through plebotomies prior to txing to reduce ferritin.

Thanx, my wife & I were wondering. we even questioned the high levels prior to treatment. Now  i'm wondering if all doctors really understand what and how this has to be handled.

I don't think some doctors know the correlation between high iron and the direct effect on SOC.  I think the studies on phlebotomy are relatively new compared to when they started the SOC.   There is so much documentation now and even though my doc is not a hepatologist, this was one of the first things we discussed.  He would not treat until levels were down.  I'm sure there are some more familiar with the studies of how iron binds with the virus and can tell you more, I just don't know the exact chemistry behind it.  Perhaps you can tx with better drugs in the future or try again and discuss reducing the iron levels next time.  I'm not saying that is the reason why you did not respond because I may not either but it's a consideration anyway.  Good luck mike -  I truly wish you the best.
