severe Eye irritation wih contacts

I fell asleep with my lens still in. When I woke and tried to take the extremely dry right lens out it and tore in half. I had one half on my finger with the other still in my eye. I got the other half out but I am worried that maybe their is still a small piece of the lens still on my eye. the right eye has been irritated somewhat the last couple days. I washed it out with solution and water.
If a piece of the lens was still there would I definitely feel it?
I have been wearing a new lens in the eye, so would that make a difference?
Do lenses shred when they tear or is it usually a clean tear?
