Hi.

Methadone is liked by some Dr's because building a tolerance to it takes a little longer than morphine or oxycontin.  There are less side effects.  That means they can keep you on a maintenence level of methadone without having to raise it as often as morphine.  Once you stop taking it your tolerance will lower, but my knowlege is that it takes at least a month to lower your tolerance enough to make a huge difference when you begin on it again. Otherwise you may feel a huge benefit in the beginning but very quicly build back up that tolerance within a week or two.
Percocets arent nessesarily weaker but there short acting where methadone is a long acting medication so you only have pain relief for 4 hours versus 12 to 24 hours.  This makes your pain go up and down and your never going to get a hold on it.  Thats why time released medications are much better for chronic pain.
opioids will never be able to take away all of your pain, but your doctor will try to get it below or at a  5 on a pain scale from 1-10.  So if you want it at a 1or 2 you may never feel satisfied.

I hope this helped you a bit
Good luck.
