What is this red spot in my eye?

I have had a red spot in my eye for about 3 years. it does not cause any vision problems and it does not hurt. the color ranges from a fleshy pink to bright red. I have tried visine eye drops and those help temporarily but eventually make the eye worse. systane eye drops seem to work for a few hours then ware off. I have seen a doctor and they say it is an eye nevis or something like a red frecke in my eye. They said i could get surgery, but it would be for cosmetic purposes. please tell me if you know what it is. thanks.
