eye spasm, jaw, ear pain, questin about mri

Hello,

I have been having right side headaches for over a year, I also have been having spasms on my eyelid the crease below the eyebrow.  I have been to the Dr many times, ruled out everything (sinus, migraine, etc)  I went to a neurologist a couple of weeks ago, he suggested a MRI and MRA  of the head (its scheduled for next week).  Last week my right jaw near the ear and ear started hurting still hurts,  (also head still hurts at times).  the pain fluctuates.  My question is will the MRI of the head show TMJ?  I have been reading about my symptoms and it sounds a lot like this, since the jaw and ear started hurting.  (plugged feeling in the ear)  Also right side neck pain for a few days a couple of weeks ago.  (I just assumed I slept on it wrong or something).

Thanks,
Kathy

Hello Kathy,

You made the right choice by posting this under neurology. From your symptoms it appears you are having "Trigeminal Neuralgia". This is a self limiting disease, easily treatable, and you are already in consultation with your neurologist, who will help you out.

The Trigeminal, is one of the pair of cranial nerves (nerves that arise in brain), and supplies the face.  It comes out on the face (but ofcourse you cannot see it as its beneath your skin and soft tissues) roughly near the point where your ear and lower jaw meet. If this nerve is pressed or for some other reason its irritated, you will face symptoms you are facing now. So maybe your right Trigeminal nerve is being troubled.

A MRI of the brain is a good bet as it will rule out any pathology of the brain. We will wait for your MRI results.

By TMJ, I understand, you are talking of Temporo-Mandibular Joint Disorders. Lets wait for the results. If the joint is affected the tests will surely reveal so.

I had something similar in 2006. My symptoms turned out to be Narrow-Angle Glaucoma in the effected eye.

Have you been to an ophthalmologist, who is knowledgeable about glaucoma, to rule out any eye involvement?
