BULIMIA IN OLDER WOMEN

by Warbunny, May 11, 2008 09:52PM
I have been actively bulimic for many years (I am 62) and I don't want to die like this.  I am 5'1" and weigh 115#.  I have no idea where turn.  I don't want my husband and my children, who are adults with children of their own, knowing because I am so ashamed.  I have had eating disorders since I was a young child -- I remember hiding food at the age of 8 or 9.  As a pre-teen I had gained a lot of weight and was put on dexadrine.  Not only did I lose weight my grades were straight A's.  When the doctor stopped prescribing I started slipping on grades and of course the weight came back on.  Please help!!!

Hi There,

The fact of the matter is that eating disorders are very common in older women and I think that the reason that it is not a well known fact is simply because as older women this is something that we hide pretty well.  I am 38 "Soon to be 39" and I also have an eating disorder.  I flip flop between bulimia and just not eating at all.  I am 5'0" and I weigh about 113.  I have a medium frame and I work out like a demon.  I both love and hate food.  I know that eating disorders is being more and more recognized as not just being an issue for teens and young women as I have read more and more about it and my therapist says it is so very common in the older population as well.  The only thing I can tell you is that your not alone and please seek some help.  Your therapist can keep the fact that your seeking help for that issue very private.  I am in help right now for several things but the eating disorder is certainly 1 of them.

Hugs And Blessings,

Cindy
