If you're having niggling suspicions that you're becoming an addict, listen to those feelings. There's nothing wrong with an occasional drink or having a few with friends, but it sounds like you know alcohol is becoming your comfort when something upsets you. Watch yourself. See if you can go without drinking for a week, or even when a problem comes up that normally you would drink to. If you find it very difficult or that you can't, then I'd say you're dealing with an addiction problem.

I'd also recommend, if possible, seeing a counsellor short-term to talk about your father's death. It sounds like it had a heavy impact on you. You deserve a fair chance to deal with it in a healthy way so that it doesn't slow down your life. Good luck.

If you have to ask the question, then yes, you are probably an alcoholic/addict.

Because my father is an alcoholic, and because it was affecting my school grades when I was a child,I have been going to meetings for 30 some years. They have always taught us this one thing :
If a person "NEEDS" a drink, even if it is just once a year...as long as they "NEED" that drink...then they are an alcoholic. I'm sorry if that is not the response you wanted to hear, but that is what they teach you.
They say a person that drinks a case of beer a day, but doesn't NEED to drink it...meaning that they can walk away from it ( as slow_healer has suggested) then you apparently don't have a problem.
In My personal opinion however, once it starts to become a problem to your health, once it starts getting in the way of your work, or your personal life and relationships...then you have a problem.
BTW...we were also taught that alcoholism runs in families. So if your dad, mother, uncle, grandfather,or whoever has had a problem...you may inherit it...sorry again....that is what they teach...so I have always stayed away from it.
