Operation with lymphedema

by deb949, May 12, 2008 05:45AM
I am scheduled to have some minor surgery on my toe involving cleaning out some spurs from Arthritis so that I am able to move my toe freely. Will I have a problem scheduling surgery if I have Lymphedema?

No, just make sure you wear your sleeve and gauntlet to prevent any more swelling.  Make sure your doc knows, too.  Also make sure everyone (nurses, techs) knows there's to be no needle sticks or blood pressure taken from that arm.

I had a c-section with lymphedema...all went well.  Finding a sight to take blood pressure could prove interesting, they did mine from my leg until the IV came out.

Good luck on your surgery!

Not unless your lymphedema is present in your legs and I'm assuming it isn't. Here's my story about lymhedema and surgery. I recently had to undergo tendon surgery in the hand on my operative side and I did have lymphedema which was treated for some time. I talked with the hand surgeon regarding my concerns and he said there was no evidence to support the theory than all the injections and the tourniquet on during surgery or the surgery itself would have any cause any flare up of the lymphedema. Of course everything was done under sterile conditions which would be different than some injury under normal conditions. I will continue the precautions that I have followed for 6 years though. Just in case. Good luck with your toe.
