Almost 9 year old girl in stage 2 puberty

by JMLECMom, May 12, 2008 09:57AM
Hello.  I have an almost 9 year old daughter in stage 2 puberty.  She has somewhat sparse thick curly pubic hair and small breast buds.  She is also slightly overweight but very athletic.  My biggest concern is for her future height.  She is projected to be at least 5'10" and I'm worried that she will not make it because of her early puberty.  My pediatrician has blown off my concerns, should I be worried?  Do I need to take her to a pediatric endocrinologist and have blood work done?  She has not had a large growth spurt, no body odor, no acne, no underarm hair.  She will be 9 in June 2008 and is currently 4'10" and 100 pounds.  Thank you.

I really don't understand your post at all.

Why would you be worried that your daughter won't be significantly taller than average women?   I think most mothers worry that their daughters WILL be much taller than average.   Guys have benefits from being very tall,  women don't.    Sad but true.

At 4'10" and 100 pounds,  she's slightly underweight,  not overweight,  according to this chart.

I'm not sure what your opinion regarding "most mothers" has to do with anything.  I am very tall, as is my husband, and I want my daughter to reach her full predetermined genetic height, without being limited by early puberty.  What is so difficult to understand about that?  I'm simply asking for medical advice as to whether we need to intervene at 8 1/2 or is that on the acceptable end for puberty.  Believe me, there is nothing "sad" about a tall woman.  BTW, that chart you quoted is clearly stated for women, not young girls.

I didn't say that tall women are sad,  I said that it's sad that society wants men to be tall and doesn't want women to.  By and large.

She does seem to be hitting puberty early,  which puts her at greater risk for reproductive cancers and a difficult time dealing with emotional sexual issues when she isn't prepared to deal with them yet.

Maybe you should ask your doc.  I don't think her height being a little shorter than 5'10" would be my biggest concern.
