Lymph nodes that are found during routine screening mammograms or ultrasounds can mean different things. Lymph nodes are usually reactive, meaning they just respond to something that is happening in their territory, in your case, the breast. These lymph nodes can respond to infections in the breast, or in some cases, due to a neoplastic condition (possible malignancy). However, if this is from a malignant cause, the mammogram would have given clues to this. It is also possible that the cause of the enlargement cannot be determined. A significant portion of enlarged lymph nodes are actually idiopathic (the cause cannot be confirmed). I agree with a surgeon consult who might suggest a biopsy procedure to ascertain the nature of the lymph nodes.
