Recurring eye infection in my right eye

What could be the reason for only my right eye becoming really red(bloodshot red) and painful. Is it an eye infection? And this year, I started to wear soft contacts that are equivalent to hard ones and I have had this recurring
eye infection in my right eye 4 times this year and then it will be in my left eye at other times.
I hate being in public when this happens but I must show up for work.
Is it my contacts? Could it be a scratch on my contact that is causing this or do I in fact have an eye infection of
some sort?
