Do I have Asperger's Syndrome

by Jadeexx, May 12, 2008 06:26PM
I'm 19 and when I was younger my family believed I had Aspergers.  I had Selective Mutism (which I no longer suffer with, although I do still have social anxiety disorder to a less extreme degree), OCD, co-ordination and general motor movement problems, sleep disturbances and trouble falling asleep (all of which I still suffer with now) and would look away when spoken too by strangers, although this was because of extreme shyness.
Now in my early adult life I am able to maintain close relationships (although not so much romantic relationships, but I feel this is more to do with the type of person I usually become involved with, rather than my inabilty to obtain or maintain one), communicate well, high empathy and compassion, able to use body language appropiately and understand others body language, am able to use the correct tone and understand others tone of voice, I understand sarcasm and I can generally read other peoples facial expressions aswel as using them myself etc.
I do have problems with slight agrophobia, social anxiety disorder, OCD, depression, sleep disturbances, and psychotic symptoms (hearing voices) to name a few
Is it likely that I do have Aspergers?

Hi there, you sound similar to me, though voices (running commentary) can be attributed to schizoid PD, which could have formulated as a result of paranoia due to social misunderstandings associated with aspergers, although there's schizoaffective disorder, bi-polar type with mood swings occuring, or phychotic depression that can cause this. Oh how they love their labels!

It's so muddled for me right now also, but you could be 'an aspie.' I can't believe i'm suggesting this, but perhaps an appointment with a pshychiatrist would be beneficial for you. I had never dared go to a mental health professional, but the older i got the more i came to realise i am a seperate entity from the rest of humanity! My misunderstandings and mess ups were graduating with age, attractive or not looks fade, and there's things to work on! I only dared to look up Aspergers after he mentioned it in the first appointment, along with OCD, Bulimia Bi-polarity. Exhausting stuff. Take care of yourself.
