doxil-hand/foot rash

by kathymsrd, May 12, 2008 07:26PM
Hi everyone, Just a question about doxil and ppe-my mom had her 4th doxil 2 weeks ago and has a rash on her hands and feet. The first three doxil treatments we took everyones advise on the ice packs on hands and feet and cool showers,etc... She uses eucerin cream. The avastin was stopped because of high blood pressure problems. But wanted everyone to know her ca125 went from 125 to 45...Is there any other treatment for the rash  that has worked? I bought her cortisone creme and she is going to try it tonight, if that doesn't work then it is back to the oncologist for more meds. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.. You have (believe it or not) been super helpful in the past 2 years. I really believe that is why my mom has been doing so well... God bless.. Thank you....

I used to give my mom something called 'blue emu' (available at walgreens) which is good for a lot of that stuff as far as relief from the pain of it, etc.

For prevention, it's basically too late besides continuing with the ice backs (not sure how long you kept them on but you would have to at least for the entire infusion and afterwards too for at least 1 to 2 hours for any effect).  But one method has been L-Glutamine (available at GNC, etc.) but you'll need to down about 5 to 10 grams of it (which is very easy to do with GNCs version...it's unflavored so you add it to whatever.

Beyond that...check out the doxil website (or ask your oncologist) as they have resources that talks about this reaction and some simple measures to help ease it.

I do not know if there is anything that will completely make it go away. I had the same problem, but on my feet only. I had to miss a few treatments and had to have my dosage reduced before I saw any significant change. Please make sure that her Dr is aware of the situation and he will adivse what course to take.

Thank you for your concern. I did notify the oncologist and she was on over the counter corticosteroid creme for hands and feet and it worked well. She also had a sore in her mouth and a gel was given and worked well also....She is going for cataract surgery on Friday.. The first friday in june she will be on her 5th doxil treatment.. Maybe they will start the avastin with it again since her blood pressure went down....The doxil/avastin combo is putting her ca125 numbers low... She has minimal side effects, so hopefullt they will give her a break soon....
Thank you for the phone number and the concern...
This is a very helpful site with insightful people and I am grateful there is a place I can turn....
