Timing of a Colonoscopy during a symptom free period

by yimes, May 12, 2008 09:33PM
I have intermittent bouts of bowel urgency, diarrhea or soft stools, and nausea with fullness and pressure in my abdomen.  Sometimes they are weeks apart and sometimes months.  Passing blood is not a symptom  They usually last for a couple days to a week.  I have seen a GI doctor and she scheduled me for a Colonoscopy and upper GI.  She mentioned looking for a mild colitis.

My question is is it diagnostically important to be having one of my "attacks" during or around the time of the test.  In other words, my test is scheduled this week and I have felt great for a couple of weeks now and I am concerned an inflamitory process could be missed because I am not currently suffering symptoms.

Hi yimes,
If you are symptom free , colonoscopy may not show any finding of colitis. But if you have developed any complication out of it, it may be seen.

If your symptoms are not due to colitis and due to some other reasons, then colonoscopy might show relevant findings.
