What does feeling an edge on your breast mean?

by phylb16, May 12, 2008 09:45PM
I had biopsies in both breasts today in the office.  I had lumps on both sides on the outer bi lateral area.  He poked several different needles in these areas and past it to the patholegist.  He said he doesnt think it will show anything.  The ultrasound and mammogram I had the radiologist said that it was tissue over tissue.  He said most doctors wouldn't do a biopsy but knowing my doctor he probably would.  My doctor said he was more concerned with the left breast because he could feel an edge.  But he still thinks it will be okay.  I am in knots waiting to find out.  He said he isn't calling it a mass.  I just don't get it.  What is he meaning by and edge?  Two other doctors felt my breasts and didn't feel anything.  I went to the surgeon because they saw another spot that they are calling a dense area.  Then he found these areas himself.  I didn't even go for this.  Next thing I know I am having biopsies for something I wasn't even aware of.  I am suppose to call Wednesday afternoon for the results.

Hi,

The description you gave is pretty vague.

Are your breasts nodular in feel? This is normal but some breasts may feel nodular and when examined down to the line of the armpit, then a margin where breast tissue ends may be an edge. These are all within normal breast examinations however.

Other situations may involve tumor infiltrating the tail of the breast near the armpit - this would be clearly "mass" so this doesn't sound like a plausible explanation.

Best wait for results, and on your part familiarize yourself with your breasts. It may be best to locate the edge with the help of the doctor so you could also monitor it.

Stay positive.
