Re-testing for H. Pylori

by AliChapman, May 13, 2008 12:10AM
I was diagnosed with H. pylori about 6 weeks ago and was treated with 10 days of anitibiotics and Prilosec.  The upper right side abdominal pain that I was experiencing prior to starting therapy suddenly started going away.  After the 10 days of antibiotics, I continued to take the Prilosec 2X/day.  Within 2 weeks, my URQ pain was back.  My Gastroenterologist is going check me to see if the H. pylori was eradicated.  I have the orders to do a stool test for this but I know that you should not have taken any antibiotics or PPI's for 2 weeks before doing this test.  I have not taken these medications for 2 weeks now but I did recently (5 days ago) take Diflucan for a yeast infection.  Do you think this would alter the test results in any way?
Also, is H. pylori contagious?  I can't imagine how I got it myself, but I'm concerned about my small children becoming infected.
Thank you for any kind of help!

Diflucan has a totally different way of action as antibiotics have, it should not affect bacteria, but I cannot confirm this. Idea: call to the lab.

H. pylori probably is contagious, but the mode of transmission is not known (I've been searching for this before).

I was treated twice for H-Pylori.  The second time was the doctor's error.  When your blood tested after the first treatment it will still show in your blood but that does not mean that you still have active H-Pylori.  I had read about a breath test on the internet and checked with my primary care doctor, he checked with another doctor who did use this breath test and after doing this simple test I knew within 24 hours that I no longer had H-Pylori in my system.  The treatment to kill off this bacteria is so powerful that I had a very hard time getting through it, let alone a second time.  A doctor of Internal Medicine told me that it comes from water. Most of the population in third world countries have this.  I do not believe it is transferred from person to person.  I had it for years not knowing it and none of my children or husband have ever had it.  Yet I am very careful even to this day about kissing my grandkids. I kiss them on the top of their head.
I am a firm believer of hand washing and a dishwasher.  My father, mother and I all had H-Pylori and we also all lived in a small town with well water, no water filtering in those days.  I am 62 years old.  Good Luck. and always becare what you drink and where it comes from.
