Kidney cysts

by Sidelines, May 13, 2008 06:10AM
I am a 55 year old caucasian with a history of kidney stones and high blood pressure. Recently on the advice of a GP and heart specialist I added Co-Diovan to the Inderal I have been taking for more than a decade. I presented myself at a hospital in Bangkok yesterday with pain in the flanks (below the kidney). Because of my history with kidney stones my urologist recommended an ultra-sound as well as blood and urine tests and an X-ray The blood test came back negative for PSA and the urine test was negative for blood. A previously known kidney stone remains but the ultrasound also revealed other cysts (these were absent from an ultrasound 11 months earlier.). The report described them as calcified cortical cyst 11mm at mid-pole (right kidney) and cortical cyst 16mm at mid pole (left kidney). The overview went further: Bilateral renal calcification, could be calcified cyst and/or calcified angiomyolipoma. Advice close follow up. The urologist said I did not have cancer and should have further tests in a year. I have two questions A Could the Co-Diovan be worsening my kidney problems and should I stop taking the pills? B Should I seek a second opinion as one year seems a long time and everything I have read suggests that, while rare, calcified angiomyolipoma is normally cancerous?
