Blind/Dark Spots upon waking up

I just recently noticed that when I wake up in the morning, if I quickly move my eyes from right to left or vice-versa I see a large "flash" (that kind of looks like a black spot/shadow) in the center of one eye that lasts for a fraction of a second. If I do it in the opposite direction, I see the same thing in the other eye. The weird thing is that when I fully wake up, say after 10 minutes or so (until I stop feeling sleepy), I don't see it when I move my eyes in the same fashion. What is this?
