Hormone Replacement Therapy for ER/PR negative breast cancer

by peace08, May 13, 2008 08:46AM
I had stage 1 breast cancer in 1999 followed by lumpectomy, radiation and chemotherapy.  It was ER/PR HER2 negative, grade 3.  In 2007 I had a new cancer in the other breast, DCIS it too was ER/PR HER2 negative, I chose to have both breasts removed.  In Feb 2008 I had a full hysterectomy to avoid any future possiblity of ovarian/uterine cancer.  My mother had breast cancer at age 37 and died of colon cancer at age 55.  I have tested negative for BRCA I &II.  I am 54 years old went into chemo induced menopause when I was 45 and have dealt with severe hot flashes since 1999.  Since removing my ovaries I have had increased menopause symptoms, the hardest one has been depression.  I know that it is a lack of hormones, would it be an option for me to take hormones since I am ER/PR negative?  Would phytoestrogen be a safer alternative?

Thank you!

You might want to read Dr. Lee's book on menopause, as well as Susan Love's breast book. There are ways to improve your post-menopausal quality of life without nasty dangerous HRT.  Changes in diet, looking into progesterone cream, bioidenticals, other ways to relieve depression, etc, would be a safer and healthier alternative to HRT.
