I'm new with some questions:)

by danee85, May 13, 2008 10:50AM
Hey everyone. I'm Danielle i'm new here:) I was diagnosed with PCOS last January and started metformin and provera (to start my period). I just took clomid a couple weeks ago on days 3-7. My doctor said i had like 20 follicles but none were mature. Does anyone know a reason why they didn't mature? So now she took me off of metformin and I just started avandia. And wheneveer I start my next period she's gonna put me on Femara and an hcg shot. Has anyone had any success with any of these meds??!! Also, since I took clomid this month, is that gonna allow me to start my period without provera? If anyone has any advise, it will be greatly appreiciated!! thanks:)

Hey Danielle!

I'm not new to the PCOS stuff.  I'm 39 yrs old, a mom to twins that were conceived by using fertility drugs and a IUI, after 7 years.

I am probably the best person to answer your question, because I DISLIKE the fact that ob/gyn's give out Clomid and other fertility drugs like they were like candy.  So with that said, this is JUST MY OPINION.

Clomid is used to stimulate the ovaries to make follicles (eggs), so that if you don't ovulate on your own, this is "supposed" to help.  It didn't work for me after 10 cycles.  The follicles were not mature, meaning that they were too small to be successful in ovulation.

I don't know why she took you off the metformin, since that is one of the best for us PCOS patients.  It helps with leveling out our blood glucose and aides in ovulation, if done correctly.

Femara is another ovulatory drug like Clomid.  The HCG shot will be given to release your follicles, if they are mature enough.  This is also the "pregnancy" hormone that "if" you conceive, they will be monitoring to see if your pregnancy is viable.

One question I do have for you is...is this a regular ob/gyn or a "fertility specialist"?  There is a huge difference.

Hope all goes well for you.  Keep us updated.

Take care,
God Bless,
Julie D

Hi Danielle :-)

I am on my 3rd Femara cycle. I am already prone to migraines so this medicine definately makes me have more of them. Femara is better for you than Clomid becayse it does not thin your lining as much. On my first cycle, I made one mature follicle and they gave me an Ovidrel (HCG) shot to release the egg. We did not conceive so the next cycle produced 2 follicles-one on each ovary (14mm and 17mm). Follicles need to be at least 18mm so I went back the next day for my shot to give them a little more time to mature. Now I am at day 11 of my 3rd femara cycle and will go in tomorrow for my day 12 ultrasound to see if I made any follicles and if I did and they are mature, they will give me the shot right then. If we don't conceive on this cycle, we will start a new protocol and try something new.

I hope that my explanation of my experience helps you decide what to do!!!
Best wishes and God Bless
Michelle
