There are many possible causes for having a small non-functioning kidney. You may have been born with it, it may be the result of trauma or it may have developed it as the result of urine infections as a child. Not all urine infections cause symptoms and yet can severely damage a kidney. If you get frequent urine infections as an adult, you should see a urologist to learn if you have urine refluxing into your kidney. Also, if you have high blood pressure this kidney may be the reason and need to be evaluated.
Check to see that your overall kidney function (serum creatinine, a blood test) is normal. It may have been checked when you had your child. Many individuals have a single kidney and do not have any long term problems. To get answers that are specific to you, see a urologist.
