Enlarged spleen normal?

by Lion10, May 13, 2008 09:30PM
I'm 16 years old, about 6-3 and weigh around 245. I have been diagnoised with mono for about 2 weeks but felt like i had it alot longer. I went back today and the doctor felt around and said that it wasn't enlarged anymore but still wanted me to get an ultrasound. I am suppose to be practicing football full-contact right now. But my parents are weary of letting me due to my spleen being 13.2. They are scared that it will rupture but I believe that could happen at anytime. Do I need to wait before practicing?

Wow, I'm surprised you can even think about football so soon after having mono. Not because of your spleen but because it usually takes a while to get one's strength back. What did your doctor say about it? If your doctor releases you medically maybe your parents will feel different, but the doctor will probably want to see your scan first.

Think of it like a water balloon - the tighter it is filled the easier it will burst, while one not filled tight is more resilient.

Maybe you could do some of the running and passing conditioning and just forego the tackling until released. Don't want to rush this and maybe lose the whole season (not to mention your spleen).  Hope you have a successful season.
