swollen thumb with shooting pains

Almost a month ago, the pip joint in my left thumb suddenly swelled noticeably and became warm and painful to the touch or upon bending. The swelling has continued to come and go, and the joint is now clicking. There is also occasional numbness on the top of the joint when it is swollen. The most recent symptom in the last week is the onset of random shooting pains, either from the outer side of the joint or from the top of my thumb. They are rather sharp. I can recall no trauma to the thumb before the swelling first occurred. I do have de quervain's on and off, but it has never affected the pip joint or had these symptoms, except for the numbness. I can't find any information about the thumb pip joint except injury. It doesn't really fit gout or pseudogout symptoms because the intensity of the pain isn't great enough among other things.
Has anybody experienced something like this without an injury?

After two brief rounds of shooting pains this morning, the thumb is again swelling up and doesn't want to bend. This is ridiculous. I think I'm just going to have to get a splint.
