Progesterone Shots

by Hyena5, May 14, 2008 10:26AM
I have been having some problems with my pregnancy I am 11 weeks. Yesterday my Dr. told me my Progesterone levels were dropping so she gave me a 100 shot of progesterone? She said I shouldn't have any side affects or anything like that. So then what good is it going to do? I mean what is the Progesterone shot for? Any experiences?

I only know from doing IVF that your body needs progesterone to stay pregnant.  After you do IVF transfer (putting embryo into body) you have to take progesterone shots daily.  The only side effects are that of which make you feel preggo and if you already are, you won't have any others I think.  That is all I know about it, good luck!

To: not ovulating
I have tried clomid for several months and it didn't work.  Does anybody know the best and not the most expensive way to go about ovulating?  I believe this is my problem, either I don't or not long enough.  I have had some tests, they all were normal.  Wost the progesterone shots be the best way to go?  I just started taking, red clover and vitex.
Every ovulation test I ever did tested negative no matter when I tested. Also My husband is good.

Being already pregnant, you shouldn't have any side effects that you will notice.  PIO (progesterone in oil) is usually prescribed for ivf cycles.  PIO produces the same side effects of pregnancy - bloating, constipation, hot flashes... so, if you already have these symptoms you won't notice anything.
I have done 3 ivf cycles with PIO.
If you are new to PIO here are some helpful tidbits for injection:
*warm the oil up prior to injection. What we do is fill the syringe, then hold the syringe in your closed fist for 30 minutes prior to injection. This helps the oil go in much easier.
*some find it helpful to ice the injection site prior to injection, and then warm (heating pad) after the injection.  I usually sat on a heating pad afterward and slept with one under my bumm at night.
* it is okay to end up with a lumpy rear.  You may find yourself with lumps or knots from the injection.

Hope this info helps. :-D

The biggest thing that I noticed was CONSTIPATION.  If you have a problem with this to begin with make sure you take a stool softner or eat losts of prunes.  I got so bad with the first IVF that I thought that I was going to have to go to the doctor - It was like cement.  I learned for the second time.

I had mood swings a little.  Progesterone is a hormone that always made me a little moody.

I also had bloating.
