pvc's and colonoscopy/endoscopy

by rel197136, May 14, 2008 08:37PM
I have had pvc's for years.  Heart structurely normal.  I am scheduled for a colonoscopy and endoscopy and scared because of the pvc's.  Has anyone had  these done?  Does the meds make them worse?  Is it safe to have?

I recently had surgery and they said some anesthesia could trigger my arrhythmia. But they were more concerned with my PSVT (atrial tachy). It doesn't bother me but I can understand that they didn't want to be in the middle of my innards and have my heart rate pop up to 190 bpm. I had to start on meds a couple weeks before the surgery to calm things down. I'm not sure they worry so much about PVC's unless you're having couplets and triplets hundreds of times a day. Even then, I don't know.

Make sure your doctor knows about your PVC's. I think they use conscious sedation for the colonoscopy which is different than full out anesthesia. Maybe no problem at all.

I've had two endoscopies since starting to have PVC's.  I've had ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS and the doctor has never been concerned about it.

Good luck.

I had an endoscopy back when my PVC's frist started and were REALLY bad.  I was afraid too but had no problem.  What they used to put you to "sleep" is not as potent as regular anesthesia medication.  I understand your fears, but it will fine.  You will be out all of 10-15 minutes with the endoscopy...not sure about the other.

I was having thousands of PVCs/day and had a colonscopy and a GYN procedure.  Both procedures required some type of sedation (versed for the colonscopy and propofol for the GYN procedure).  Both doctors said I had no problems with PVCs during the time I was sedated.  Seems that the anes. works to quiet the palps : )

Boy, can I relate.  I was scared to death to have my colonoscopy last September.  I came to this board for reassurance.
I was so scared that I chose NOT to be sedated.  I got through the entire procedure with no pvc's and no sedation.  I did mention to my doctor that I had pvc's and PAT and he was not in the least worried.  By the way, they use versed and fentanyl and from what I am told these have no affect whatsoever on pvc's.  You will be fine!!!  The prep was no problem either.  I took the pills instead of the drink.  No problems with pvc's.
