Shadow under scar in Ultrasound

by Miffles, May 14, 2008 09:47PM
I had a lumpectomy and radiotherapy five years ago and have religiously kept up annul mammograms and ultrasounds.  Latest results just received but appointment with specialist is not until next week.  The results have always been but this time despite the mammogram noting palenchymal scarring, it detected no massess or calcifications.  However, ultrasound report says there is shadowing beneath the scar but that results are otherwise unremarkable.

Should I be worried?  Should the ultrasound report have provided a bit more information?  Thinking of ringing the Radiologist.

Hi there.

Scars are dense tissues which form from the previous surgery and/or radiation therapy.  These dense tissues cannot be penetrated or evaluated very well by the ultrasound and this would result in shadowing.  I believe that this is not something to worry about but I still suggest you continue with your surveillance studies annually.  I would also suggest that you have regular visits with your surgeon or your oncologist so that your breasts can be evaluated properly from time to time.

Regards.
