Harming myself with too much iron, manganese, etc?

by Kenny21, May 15, 2008 12:59AM
I have been taking 2 tablets of Centrum Performance for the past month. I just read up on how bad taking in too much iron, maganese and other minerals can be. Also i am 20.

The way i was taking in the vitamin, i have been getting 2-4 times the amount recommended of iron, manganese, selenium and several others for the past month. I thought it was fine because it does not have any warning about taking in more than 1per day.

Ive had joint pain in the left side and very light pain in the left pec area for a  few days.

So my question is, have i done any serious harm already? and should i go consult a doctor asap?

Thank you for any information.

Iron, manganese, and selenium are minerals and they stay within our bodies. That is why it is recommended to take the daily recommended dose. Overdosing over time can lead to toxic levels and serious harm. Even mega-dosing of multi-vitamins can cause harm. The fat soluble vitamins also stay in our body and can become toxic with mega-dosing. There have been issues with mega-dosing with water soluble vitamins and people had serious side effects temporarily. You probably have not done any serious harm after a month but I suggest you go to your MD and get checked.

Usually multivitamins are harmless to overdose on but you are correct we don't want to overdose on some things like manganese. I would visit your doctor to get further information and/or keep researching if it will be harmful. I was recommended to take half my multivitamin at two different times of the day with a meal for better absorption.

Generally, you should be able to get your daily requirments of your vitamins and mineral with fruits and vegetables and trace minerals from kelp. A multivitamin can help most people because to many processed foods are consumed. If you have the financed I would best recomend a naturopathic doctor to help you with your vitmain and mineral supplementation. A good visit with a doctor may help you with your joint pain.
