Mother of Toddler Sick with Chronic Meningitis

by Sparrow411, May 15, 2008 01:10AM
I was in Switzerland a few years ago (2005) when my two year old daughter contracted what was noted to be a viral meningitis (via hand foot and mouth disease, coxsakie(?)) from which she recovered.  Around the same time I became ill, symptoms progressing over a month.  My body it seemed began to shut down with severe arthritis, chest pains and heaviness, tingling throughout body, weight loss, severe fatigue, vertigo (constant) coupled with my right eye crossing etc.  Went to the hospital and all tests normal; eye thought to be a decompensation (have history of strabismus) due to an undetermined, likely viral, illness.  Begged for a spinal tap and did not get one until over a year later of constant, daily illness. LP revealed increased lymphocytes 50 or so, but last LP was clear.  Tested for bird illnesses as seven days prior my becoming ill I had cared for a sick sparrow that had fallen out of the sky (seven days after I had a sever vertex headache and my health declined).  To date my eye has resolved along with the vertigo, but I still have a noticable deficit in my sense of orientation/ direction.  I am constantly breathless, with muscle weakness and hypersensitivity/soreness, arthritic with some memory problems and I just do not feel my old self mentally.  I have had a neuro psy. test recently, and I am being sent to another Infectious Disease Dr., as the last (and first) has said he is stumpped.  For the bird, I have been tested for Lyme, neuro Lyme, West Nile and Bird Flu, but nothing else (outside of Parrot Fever, neg. and was given broad spectrum antibiotics as precautionary back in Switzerland).  I have had a work-up for Fungi, not sure which ones, TB, Herpes, Negative for Lupus. excellent Rhumatologists could find no evidence of Rhum. disease, although they do not have my LP result.  Should mention that I was taking Herpes medication for Molerets meningitis as a precaution / experiment via my ID Dr.; he cant' say whether my most recent LP was clear due to this or whether the infection had just finally resolved itself.  He said I could keep taking the expensive Meds if I wanted, but he reminded that I reported not to feel better when on them. They have one vial of my spinal fluid reserved and he can't think of what to test for.  I need help as I am still ill daily and the cognitive issues bother me the most.  When I was in Switrzerland, having first fallen ill, the only thing they could find was a severe, large sinus infectious via MRI, which  eventually disappeared, seen via MRI. Also has some white blood cells in urine (twice, UTI for which they gave antibiotics)  The same sinus infection reappeared via MRI in the U.S., apparently resolved in a recent CT scan of sinuses (which according to ENT look alright).  ID referred me to another ID doctor, but insists I see another Rhumatologist.  What should I do?  Am sure there are a host of bird diseases they could check for (?) I have a pic of the bird I cared for (had rubbed my eyes several times after touching its beak), and I believe it was a sparrow.  Can anything be done; can I be helped, or will I just eventually subcome to this unknown cause of 'chronic lymphocytic meningitis'?  Please help for my little girl's sake.
