HSV1 Exposure?

by nervous_in_ca, May 15, 2008 09:40AM
I'm a 31 year old straight white male...tall, slender build, healthy.

I recently started dating (and having unprotected sex) with a girl much younger than me, but that has been with a few guys more than I would prefer. I insisted that we take STD tests before we stop using condoms...but we ended up having unprotected sex prior to getting the test results.

I've been tested for HIV etc. and all came back negative. Kaiser did the standard tests, and I used one of these online middlemen companies to arrange a herpes test. I've never had any STDs or any symptoms of herpes.

After about 2 weeks of seeing her, I got sick, which I still am. Two days ago I was kind of achy, and then Tuesday morning I woke up with a fever that got to about 102, and was very achy and sore all around. My neck glands are swollen...which is usually the case when I get a cold...and only the left side of my throat hurts when I swallow. I slept like hell a couple of nights, and my neck is still sore. I would think that I have the flu, but no vomiting or diarrhea and I haven't lost my appetite.

My HSV1 & 2 tests came back negative. The test I took was "Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2 IgG, Type Specific Antibody (HerpeSelect®)", which looking at now doesn't really work unless the infection was over a month ago?

Today she got the results of her tests and she has HSV1. She took the same test I took and her result was 3.51H...apparently. She's 20, and says she remembers getting cold sores in elementary school, but none since.

My questions for you are...and yes, I know it's pretty nervy of me to list out questions :)

1. Is this current sickness I have a result of my body processing and trying to fight off HSV1?
2. Is there an accurate test that could detect recent exposure?
3. If she has no sores and hasn't for years, is there really a high degree of risk me getting HSV1 from kissing and/or having unprotected vaginal and oral sex?

As you can imagine I'm nervous. However, I really appreciate you taking the time to read this and help me out.

Hi there -

Would you be this panicked if she hadn't tested positive for type 1?  Remember that over half of the population has hsv1, so she is not the first one you've been with that has it, statistically.

1 - Maybe.  It could also be a wide variety of things, including mono, the flu, etc.

2 - No.

3 - Its somewhat of a risk.  Its not a high risk.  Remember that odds say that more than half of the people you've kissed or had sex with also have hsv1.  You haven't gotten it yet.
