I'm a nurse and as such one of my friends is asking me a question that I don't know the answer. She essentially had a stroke (or blood clot) in the eye. She is now blind in that eye. She's undergoing some interesting therapy which has helped regain some of her vision but not much. Internal swelling has been a problem for her. She is on Effexor Xr and wanted to ask me if I thought that was contributing to the swelling. If she came off it, would it help to improve her vision? I realize she shouldn't come off it without going to her physician, but I did want to see if I could get an opthalmology opinion on the possibility of Effexor playing a role with this eye problem. Thanks!

Although blurred vision is listed as a side effect of effexor it is not the kind caused by strokes in the eye. It has more to do with relaxing the focus muscle of the eye. So effexor is not a factor in blood clots in the eye (usually a central or peripheral occlusion of the retinal arteries or veins).
