Herpes prodrome - Urinary urgency?

by jessie13, May 15, 2008 05:06PM
I was diagnosed with genital HSV-1 four years ago.  After the initial outbreak, I never had an re-occurances, until possibly recently.  Over the last four months, I've had periods of about two weeks in length (around three times, centered around my period) where I experience intense urinary urgency.  There's no burning, and tests for UTI's have been negative.  I was referred to a urologist, but at the last second the nurse I was seeing suggested she thought it might be prodrome symptoms.  Went to the urologist, who tested for cancer and kidney stones, obvious blockages.  She said she didn't think it could be caused by the HSV-1, but then described how when herpes causing urinary symptoms, it's generally a complete blockage of flow.  From what I can read, that sounds true only during the primary outbreak.  Now she's suggesting some more invasive tests to look for urinary tract causes to my urgency, but I'm worried that the symptoms are actually from my HSV-1 infection.  Does this match symptoms of prodrome?  What should I ask my doctor to test?

It's unlikely to be due to hsv1 genitally.  It would be very unusual for hsv1 to reoccur this often in the genital area without obvious triggers which I assume have been covered for you ( vaginitis being the biggest trigger or chronic irritation but you don't mention any other genital symptoms - just the urgency ).  At this point continue to follow up with your provider to try to figure out what is going on.  I hope you get answers and relief soon!
