Issues Wearing A Mouthguard

by mr_sad, May 15, 2008 10:35PM
Ok, i know this is going to sound weird, but i have problems wearing a mouthguard. it causes me to gag until i take it out. ive tried boiling it in water with mouthwash to get rid of the plastic taste (should that be the problem) but only last night i found something. ok, while im wearing the mouthguard i produce a fair amount of saliva which i have to swallow to avoid major discomfort. i noticed that when i spit the saliva out (whilst wearing the mouthguard) i have no problems wearing it. so only after i swallow several times do i get the gag reflex. why is this? what is causing this? does anyone else have a similar problem.

does anyone have any insight into this problem? it would be much appreciated.

I'm no help. Just reading your post set off my overly strong gag reflex.
Does the guard fit properly?

yep the guard fits fine, its a custom made one.
however, i did wear it a bit more this afternoon. i found that when i breathed very deep and fast i wouldnt have issues, like i wouldnt produce saliva and it wouldnt be an issue.

there is definately something abnormal at play here, i also have issues swallowing pills and i choke on food at times which is really uncomfortable.

I have that pill problem too. I've had my esophagus checked out and it is fine, so I know mine is all about an overly strong gag reflex. I don't know if it is the way some people's throats are shaped vs other people, or if the reflex is an autonomic overreaction, but it certainly is annoying.
I can take short courses of pills with only occasional trouble, but any regular pills start setting off the reaction. It's like my throat knows the pill is coming and it shuts down. I have to go through an entire throat relaxation thing just to get the pill down. Luckily, I don't have to take any regular meds, and supplements and OTC drugs come in lots of liquid forms now.
It sounds like you might have an overactive gag reflex. I've never looked it up on the internet, but there might be ways to calm it down (it's embarrassing if other people see you trying to convince your throat to swallow a pill).
